Boldt Castle...Why so Special?
by Tracy Ohlinger
Come and discover Boldt Castle located in the heart of the Thousand Islands Region.
Just ask Susan Dunlap, who has been to Boldt Castle several times in the past. This is what Susan has to say about it: "I have gone twice already and plan to return each year...great times with no stress. What a wonderful place to spend with the family. I would love to live there if I could."
What makes Boldt Castle so special to visit? You may ask yourself, "What can I see and do there?" This 120 room mansion was built at the turn of the century by a multi-millionaire, George C. Boldt for his wife, Louis Boldt. George had plans of giving his wife Boldt Castle as his love for her on Valentine' s Day . Unfortunately, his wife died in January one month prior to completion. This ended his lifetime dream of building Boldt Castle. As a result of her death, all work ended and leaving it unfinished. In 1977, almost 73 years later did the Thousand Island Bridge Authority start preserving the castle. After several million of dollars on restoring Heart Island (formerly known as Hart Island), visitors can now enjoy wandering around grounds. On the first level of the castle, you can find a museum and information on the Boldt's life.
Visitors can wander around paved walkways on the grounds visiting several buildings such as Boldt Castle, the Power House, the Clock Tower, Alster Tower , the Arch, the Hennery and the Gazebo.
The Power House was to provide water and electricity to the entire island fired by coal steam generators. From here you can see the Clock Tower and hear the musical silver chimes that it plays. It could be heard up to 4 miles away.
Alster Tower was remodeled after the defense tower in Germany, making this the playhouse for the Boldt's. This is where the Boldt Family spend most of their time. This was the first building on the island and was used for entertaining guest on the island and for the Boldt's children. Inside you will find a dancing room called the "Shell Room" of course you can guess what the shaped of this ceiling could look like. Down in the basement, you will find a bowling alley, a billiard room, a library, and several bedrooms. Of course the Alster Tower wouldn't be complete without a kitchen and grill where dining takes place in the cafe. This tower is opened to visitors. Located near Alster Tower is the Gazebo, recently rebuilt and where many wedding are held each year. Weddings can be arranged by contacting 1- 800- 847-5263 (US & Canada) or write to: 1000 Islands International Council, P.O. Box 400, Alexandria Bay, NY 13607
The Arch was the main entrance to the island. This is where the guests arrived by large yachts and were greeted on the island. Nearby, you can see the Bolt's Yacht House, where it housed their 3 yachts on Wellesley Island.

Once you have visited Bolt Castle, you will want to return again and again to view the all of the new reconstruction on the Heart Island.
