How does your school punish bullies?
by Renee Boos
How does your school punish bullies? Maybe we need to look at the
preschools and elementary schools to help squelch the violence in the later
years.
My daughter is 8 years old. Just last Thursday was the third time in
three quarters of school that I had to report a child for inflicting injury
on my daughter. From jumping on her back, to pushing her in the street to
literally pulling hair out of her head, I have sat back helplessly letting
the school handle the situation.
When reporting these "crimes" to the playground supervisor, all times she
was referred to a teacher to treat the injury and discipline was minimal. In
fact, I wouldn't call it discipline, both the aggressor and the victim sat
down to talk with the principal about more appropriate behavior.
Now, here I wonder if a fellow coworker pushed you into oncoming traffic
couldn't that coworker be brought up on criminal charges? If someone came up
behind you and pulled your hair so hard it came from your scalp, would that
not be assault?
As we debate the effect of violence on television, in music videos,
even in cartoons, could we not look at our children and think discipline
could stop the violence? Yes, dead is dead, Forever. Amen. Something all
teenagers seemingly need to be reminded of periodically. But if you were
taught in third grade that these actions could be construed as criminal,
would it not leave the message for life that violence will not be tolerated.
Before the guns, the knives, it is just plain wrong to hurt another person.
I think it is never too early to remove the violence. Missing recess,
work detail, detention, and definitely the letter home: your child exhibited
criminal behavior today may make a few parents and teachers think. We have
to stop this trend. We have to put guns away, remove them from children's
reach.
I find it funny. I grew up in a house with guns. We were taught guns
were bad, they had a purpose and we, as children had no reason to come
anywhere near the guns. To this day I am afraid of guns and their power. I
have saved myself from unspeakable harm because I knew how to fight back.
But this violence exhibited by children in my daughter's school truly scares
me. To push someone down simply because they don't like the game being
played. In ten years, will she step up to the players and shoot them?
Examine it, what do we do to repeat offenders?
Hey, I got an idea for that kid that keeps pushing other children in the
street. A dose of his own medicine is stooping to his level. How about we
keep him in fourth grade another year until his social skills are better?
So don't let your kids be bullied. Speak to the teachers, the principal,
and the parent group. Set up distinct rules of discipline and plans of
action. How will you define what is violence versus just boisterous 'play'.
Will you put it in the criminal terms? Let's fight the violence early.
