Promises, Promises
by Cheryl Demas
It's election time here in the US, and we're hearing a lot of promises from politicians. Last night as I was listening to a campaign speech on the news, it struck me how similar a politician's promises are to the promises we sometimes hear from people who are trying to get us to buy into their business opportunities. They tell us what they think we want to hear until they get what they want, our votes or our money, and then we may feel that they just forget about us.
In business, as in government, a good, strong leader can present an opportunity to us, inspire us to do our best, and motivate us to keep moving forward. But in the end, it is up to us to do the work. We have to make our own success, and we have no one to blame but ourselves for our failures.
The problem with looking for someone to bring along a business opportunity that will solve all of our problems is the same as relying on a politician to solve all of our problems. No matter what they say, they simply can't solve things for us, we have to take the initiative and take care of ourselves. They can give us the opportunities, but it's what we do with those opportunities that determines whether or not we will be successful, as a country and as a business.
If you feel that your business isn't living up to the expectations you had when you started, ask yourself if you're really doing the work to make it successful, or are you waiting for the promises to just come true? Are you working for your customers? Are you networking and generating new leads every day? Are you providing the best service you can to your customers? We all have control of our destinies, in business and in life, but we have to take the initiative.
