Women Writing for (a) Change – A Guide for Creative Transformation
by Mary Pierce Brosmer
Notre Dame, IN–In her insightful debut book, Mary Pierce Brosmer shares the
unique method of writing that she developed as founder and director of Women
Writing for (a) Change, a nationwide organization that teaches women and girls to nurture the conscious feminine voice within them.
A mother, teacher, poet, and speaker, Brosmer has published her award-winning writing in several anthologies and journals. Through her own writing, Brosmer discovered the healng nature of writing and sharing; that led to a vision and consequently, the founding of Women Writing for (a) Change. This organization is thriving and currently has six locations in addition to the main Cincinnatti branch.
According to Brosmer, Women Writing for (a) Change is an organization “in which women’s words about our lives as women are evoked, celebrated, and woven into the larger world.” She writes, “I speak as an ordinary woman who was surprised to have conceived and given birth at midlife to a powerful and empowering movement of women and girls telling the truths of our lives.” Her school and vision have bloomed into several more focused organizations for developing leadership in women, mentoring young women, and even bringing men into the feminine circle.
With a view toward sharing her organization’s story and work with a wider audience, Brosmer has written Women Writing for (a) Change. Brosmer includes her own journal entries, poems, and dreams from events that influenced her development as a woman. The personal excerpts act as extended writing exercises for readers, similar to those used in the programs and classes of WWF(a)C. Imaginative exercises, helpful examples, and provocative anecdotes enable women to explore their writing not just as a means of individual self-examination and expression, but also as a way to create and effect positive social change.
